Cost savings through Virtualisation may not be the most appealing element for operators, other than operational efficiencies and better load balancing, it is more about incremental revenue. And to do this, the different network elements need to communicate with new components and applications, hence the need for APIs. Applications could be hosted in a central app store, drawn down as and when required by the API.
