Christopher Emmons, Director, Network Infrastructure Planning, Verizon

As one of the "Big Two" US carriers and service providers Verizon manages both huge fixed line and wireless networks and has made very public commitments quickly to deploy and implement SDN and NFV technologies, services and applications on a commercial basis. However, as Christopher Emmons reveals, the sheer number of ecosystems now orbiting around the ying and yang technologies (many of which overlap one with another and feature a membership list common amongst several such ecosystems) is putting service providers in an invidious position. Do they make what might be a fateful decision to choose from a shortlist of transformation partners with whom they have history of having previously done business? Or do they wait and watch as strategic alignments are teased-out of the technological a oakum and then pick partners from those ecosystems that have sufficient and wide enough support and expertise to have achieved critical mass in what is rapidly becoming an overcrowded market?
