KPN has started to support eSIM for Simyo customers. As from today, Simyo’s Sim Only and Prepaid customers can activate eSIM digitally. Simyo, the first 100% online provider in the Netherlands, has been in the forefront of digital telephony from the outset. And that is what makes the Sim Only and Prepaid provider the best choice for KPN to start the digital eSIM.
KPN is already supporting eSIM for Internet of Things devices and is keeping a close eye on the introduction of eSIM at Simyo. KPN is also continuing its activities in the development of the eSIM standard via the global industry organization, GSMA.
Bart van den Berg, director of Simyo, talks about the introduction of eSIM. “Together with KPN we look every day at how we can make our services even better and simpler for customers. That’s why we at Simyo are the first to support eSIM. Anyone who wants to switch to Simyo can now do so even more easily. And if you want to be able to call and use the internet straight away with a new number, that is possible too. With the Mijn Simyo app the customer is completely in control of his usage, settings and now the SIM card as well. We are really proud of this! Additionally, Simyo is the first provider in the Netherlands that has activated eSIM for both Prepaid and Sim Only.”
Switching digitally with ease
eSIM is a built-in digital chip that is not linked to a particular provider. This enables users to switch to Simyo digitally without having to change the physical SIM card. Another advantage of this built-in digital SIM card is that any suitable phone can be used as a dual SIM device. This means that the user can be reached on two different phone numbers on one phone.
These phones support eSIM
eSIM is becoming more common in the Netherlands. An increasing number of smartphones have the built-in provider-free SIM card and that number will continue to rise in the years ahead. The first phones that support Simyo’s eSIM are iPhones from 2018 and 2019. Support for eSIM on Android phones will follow a little later this year, subject to the introduction of new smartphones. Prepaid customers cannot yet request a new number with eSIM from Simyo. Later on, however, they will be able to replace their SIM card free of charge with eSIM. eSIM is available for the normal subscription price, so Sim Only customers can take out a new eSIM subscription straight away. In addition, existing SIM cards can be replaced free of charge via the Mijn Simyo app.
