One of the most significant technology demos at ONS Europe this year focused on the Virtual Central Office for mobile services. First introduced last year, the latest version of VCO was demonstrated live on-stage during the event’s keynote sessions. With the latest developments in orchestration tools and SDN controllers, inbuilt capabilities for a virtualised central office are now available to create solutions that support the delivery of residential, business and mobile services. The new demo focused on the implementation of vRAN and vEPC, which represent a minimum viable mobile access network configuration. What are the critical needs for operators around VCO, and what are the advantages of an open source community approach to VCO? Service providers can take advantage of this model now, and further community development is already underway.
