Steve Helvie, VP of Channel, Open Compute Project

The Open Compute Project (OCP) is a foundation of over 200 companies started by Facebook back in 2011 with the goal of open sourcing hardware designs for data centres. OCP has a number of projects that are relevant to telcos, including a sub project that is working on the Open Edge. Basically, wherever data centres are involved – and the emergence of edge computing is expanding the need for smaller and more cost-efficient data centres. Other projects include an advanced cooling project to reduce power consumption in increasingly dense server racks, plus a focus on the ‘circular economy’ – reducing and hopefully eliminating waste and the decarbonisation of the data centre, through better collaboration between vendors and operators.
