While most service providers want NFV nirvana, many don't want to be the first to get there

Service providers want to adopt NFV but, in tacitly acknowledging the veracity of the maxim that it's the pioneers who get the arrows and the settlers who get the land, few are in a particular rush to get there first. Meanwhile, Neela Jacques says that in the open and programmable networks of the near future there will be no single, overarching protocol or technology, nor should there be. He believes that although the sector currently exhibits an embarrassment of NFV ecosystems, all of them - no matter which turn out in the end to be essential and which largely irrelevant - are necessary and essentially beneficial at this period in the development of NFV. Thus all ecosystems have a value, all can add a piece to help complete the NFV jigsaw and it is both healthy and right that some should eventually fail and fall by the wayside. Basically it's a reiteration of the Darwinian principle of the survival of the fittest and as applicable in the evolution of comms technology as it is to humanity.
