We are in London for the Ericsson OSS/BSS Summit 2025. I'm here with Cameron Coursey from AT&T. Cameron, great to see you. Thanks very much for joining us today. So this is your first time at one of the Ericsson OSS/BSS summits. It's been going for many years now. How are you finding the event?
Cameron Coursey, AT&T (00:22):
Well, the day is young, of course, but so far I've really been impressed with the information on autonomous networks and how that can drive optimization for the operators and then better operation for the customers as well.
Ray Le Maistre, TelecomTV (00:38):
Now you are one of the speakers here at this event. Can you just give us some brief highlights of what you are going to be talking about?
Cameron Coursey, AT&T (00:46):
Sure. I'm going to be talking about our IOT marketplace that we are launching. We've actually launched already with Ericsson using their Core Commerce platform, and it's really going to offer an ability to streamline the way that we deliver services to our customers. That even more than providing a marketplace is so important because it allows us to move a lot faster and to also work with customers that we would've had a more challenging time to deal with before. So that's what I'll be talking about, how to monetize the IOT space.
Ray Le Maistre, TelecomTV (01:23):
Now you lead the connected solutions business at AT&T. How do you see the IOT sector evolving and creating new opportunities for CSPs, especially as 5G evolves?
Cameron Coursey, AT&T (01:37):
IOT has been around for a long time. It's been called machine to machine in the past and now that we're moving into the 5G era, I think we're coming back to a few of our roots and how actually can we deliver Internet of Things to customers in a better way and provide solutions for some of their newer problems. A lot of devices these days are software defined and that also means they can be updated over the air. Well that's interesting because it could be a lot of data that's coming over the network and you might want to put a quality of service on it if it needs to get there in a mission critical manner. But if it's something that could be done in the background, then you use background data transfer. These are 5G capabilities that can help us to better monetize our networks and the connectivity. But also as we move into the 5G era, there can be some new great products that we can monetize and use video as a sensors really coming along as one of the next big things that we think is going to really change the dynamic in the industry.
Ray Le Maistre, TelecomTV (02:47):
Kind of a big picture question now about the main challenges that you are seeing in the industry and how those challenges might be addressed.
Cameron Coursey, AT&T (02:57):
Complexity is probably the major challenge that has been at the forefront for IOT for a long time. It was focused IOT on enterprise customers in the past that they may have projects that could take up to three years before they deploy because they're doing their own internal work to do development. Now we're trying to migrate IOT into a space for mid markets and smaller businesses where there's not that much time. And so you've got to eliminate a lot of complexity that you have. The devices have to get a lot simpler for customers because this is not what they know. They know their own industries, they're just using IOT to help optimize their solutions and we have to make it seamless for them. So that's probably the biggest challenge we have. And I'd say the second one is how do we take advantage of this 5G network that we're all rolling out and make sure that we're not just going to the least common denominator of just providing raw connectivity, but taking advantage of some of the capabilities that 5G has to offer.
Ray Le Maistre, TelecomTV (04:05):
And as you evolve your business and strategy, how is Ericsson helping you to meet your goals?
Cameron Coursey, AT&T (04:12):
Ericsson's helping in a number of ways. I mentioned our IOT marketplace. It's based upon Ericsson's Core Commerce platform, and it is really at the heart of what we're planning for our future product strategies and how we're going to transform the way that we do business to make it simpler for our sellers and for our customers. And we're already seeing with the first product that we put onto the marketplace, a reduction in time that a seller takes from when they start the process to when they deliver and when the customer starts using a product. 14 times improvement in time. So if you can imagine what that can do, it can make the sellers more efficient, give them more time to sell, and it could also give customers the ability to buy themselves and to service themselves. And so Ericsson is helping at the forefront of that. As far as other IOT areas, we have a lot going on in Connected Car and they're also helping us to provide a retail solution in that space too. So they're helping a great deal.
Ray Le Maistre, TelecomTV (05:21):
So lots of exciting opportunities for you in the IOT market. Cameron, thanks so much for joining us today and sharing your insights.
Cameron Coursey, AT&T (05:29):
Thank you very much, Ray.
