WebRTC (Real Time Communications) is a technique to set up real-time streams between entities across the Web. These could be browsers, Web sites, M2M modules, media gateways, set-top boxes, mobile phones…  anything. The streams could support voice, interactive video, M2M and IoT applications, home security... the list is endless. 

There is already quite a bit of WebRTC embedding going on (parts of it are used in Google’s Chromecast dongle, for instance) and a wave of new applications based on it is expected over the next couple of years.  So for telcos the big question is:  how important might it be to our business.  Is it going to be yet another disruptive technology? Or is WebRTC something that we can harness to build out new services?

According to consultant Dean Bubley, who has made WebRTC one of his specialist areas,  it’s going to be both. Dean tells TelecomTV’s Martyn Warwick that for telcos its arrival makes the opportunities larger but the threats worse.
