Karel Adriaensen, Director of Product Management, Technicolor

G.fast technology permits gigabit services to be delivered over the last few hundred metres of copper cabling to permit service providers to roll-out inexpensive ultra-broadband by obviating the cost and difficulty of connecting fibre directly to consumer's homes. As Karel Arriaensen explains, Technicolor is now providing G.fast gateways that will be deployed in bulk in 2017. Ultra-broadband capability will be the pre-requisite if CSPs are to take full advantage of the expected consumer popularity of new immersive technologies and services such as virtual reality and augmented reality and G.fast is complementary to other broadband technologies. What's more, G.fast standardisation is complete as are the proofs of concept, chipsets are becoming available, services providers are evaluating and trialling G.fast and the first commercial deployments will happen within a few months. Now, where's that VR headset?
