RNP selects Nokia and Q13 to modernise Brazil’s research and education network for the AI era
- Modernization of rede Ipê will provide more than four million users with a secure, resilient backbone ready to evolve to 800G.
- High-performance connectivity will accelerate AI-enabled research, scientific collaboration and digital innovation across Brazil.
Nokia today announced that Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP), Brazil's national research and education network and the largest in Latin America, has selected Nokia and Q13 to modernize rede Ipê. The new secure, automated and high-performance IP network will connect more than four million users and will provide the foundation for AI-enabled research, scientific discovery and digital innovation across Brazil.
The new architecture will help meet growing demand for data center connectivity, large-scale scientific collaboration, private wireless networks and AI-enabled applications. By connecting institutions, people, data and intelligence more securely and reliably, it will accelerate research in areas including health, climate science, biodiversity and engineering.
Rede Ipê is critical infrastructure for Brazil’s research and education communities. As demand for AI and advanced research grows, we need a network that can scale with those requirements while connecting people, institutions and ideas across the country. This modernization will help expand access to knowledge and provide a stronger digital foundation for Brazil’s future. For the first time, RNP will have core, aggregation, peering and edge equipment from a single technology provider, enabling us to invest significantly in network automation
Ari Frazão, Adjunct Director of Engineering and Operations, RNP
The modernization will expand access to knowledge, strengthen digital inclusion and deepen Brazil's participation in the global research community. RNP connects to more than 125 academic networks across over 100 countries across the Americas, Europe and Africa.
AI is transforming how research is conducted and how scientific communities collaborate, placing new demands on the networks that connect them. Together with RNP and Q13, Nokia is building the secure, high-performance foundation needed to connect intelligence across Brazil’s research and education ecosystem. With the scale to support today’s applications and evolve to 800G, rede Ipê will help turn advances in AI and connectivity into new possibilities for discovery, innovation and society
Cássia Rinaldi, Lead, National Research and Education Networks, Latin America, Nokia
The deployment will deliver 4.8 Tbps of aggregate capacity across more than 350 routers, creating a scalable IP backbone ready to evolve to 800G. Nokia will provide core, aggregation, peering and universal provider edge capabilities using its 7750 Service Router and 7250 Interconnect Router platforms. Q13 will lead implementation and migration across the network.
Modernizing a national backbone network of this scale demands rigorous planning and seamless execution. By working closely with RNP and Nokia, we will help ensure a smooth transition to a more resilient and future-ready rede Ipê for the communities that rely on it every day.
