Cristiano Amon, President, Qualcomm

Cristiano Amon talks with Guy Daniels about how and why Qualcomm has come to hold all the technology pieces of the 5G radio puzzle, from digital (baseband) to RF (the antennas). By taking full control of its RF360 Holdings joint venure with TDK, Qualcomm has created a fully owned, end-to-end and integrated intellectual property platform for 5G. Now, says Cristiano, we can “fundamentally reengineer how we think about the RF front-end bringing in a lot of innovation”.
For consumers that means better battery life and significantly better coverage, he claims.
Cristiano also talks about the improvements in Wi-Fi 6 and how it will work together with 5G. He says all carriers see their future tied to 5G and he thinks it’s the first time that the wireless industry is providing a general-purpose technology that will benefit all of society.
