Antonio Elizondo, Head of Network Technology and Innovation Strategy, Telefónica

UNICA is the network virtualization programme of the Telefonica Group, which enables the CSP to run the same platform and infrastructure for virtualised network functions across the multiple countries in which it operates. Every single regional operation in Telefonica now has its own UNICA domain, which is currently able to support and deploy around 40 different VNFs, depending on the specific needs of each country. UNICA is now being rolled out to the network edge and central offices, where the virtualisation requirements are very different. The next challenge is to create a common information model, and for this Telefonica will build on work it is currently doing with ETSI OSM (open source MANO).
