SEOUL, South Korea (May 10, 2018) – KT Corp. (KRX: 030200, NYSE: KT) is expanding its social projects overseas using the latest information and communications technology to make a better world for everyone and everywhere.

South Korea’s largest telephone and internet company today celebrated the first anniversary of its `Giga Story’ at Moheshikhali Island in Bangladesh, which is the first global project of its Creating Shared Value (CSV) initiative launched in 2014.

Thanks to KT’s high-speed internet solutions, the small island located along the southeast tip of Bangladesh has transformed into `Giga Island,’ where people can enjoy internet speeds reaching up to 100Mbps, 500 times faster than the previously available 0.2 Mbps.

In Giga Island, the Korean telecom company is striving to improve the ordinary lives of 320,000 residents in various fields including telecommunications, education, health and economy. “Our `Giga Story’ has been a great success in South Korea and is now reaching out to the world,” said Lee Sun-Joo, head of KT’s Sustainability Management Unit. “KT will continue its role as a global envoy to push forward various CSV projects around the world.”

Everyday about 100 residents and tourists visit the 'IT Space,’ a village center offering public WiFi access, 3-month computer classes, and online learning, all free of charge. KT is also providing its teleconferencing solution, the 'K-Box,’ to elementary schools in Moheshikhali Island, jointly with the UN agency International Organization for Migration(IMO) and JAAGO Foundation, a non-profit group for online schooling in Bangladesh.

To promote E-commerce, KT, the Korea International Cooperation Agency(KOICA), and the IMO have built a website to support the island’s young local entrepreneurs to sell farm and fishery products directly to consumers to the capital city of Dhaka, enabling them to maximize their profits by cutting out the middleman.

For a better healthcare infrastructure, KT and the IMO are also providing mobile ultrasonic and blood diagnosis devices to help pregnant women and others in need receive prompt medical care without having to commute to the main land.

In Cambodia, Korea’s leading ICT company yesterday also launched a free public WiFi service in the national parks in Phnom Penh, in cooperation with the country’s Ministry of Post and Telecommunication and Telecom Cambodia. KT also plans to provide its artificial intelligence-powered K-Box solution to three elementary schools located in the outskirts of the capital city.
