Telcos have a major challenge in adopting cloud native methodologies, such as continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices in the workplace. However, Telefonica’s experience has been positive. Having been an early proponent of the move to becoming a digital service provider, Telefonica has many different developer teams that use the latest technologies and software, so it already has valuable knowledge in-house. Now, though, it is applying these methodologies and workflows to the network, which presents more of a challenge.
It launched the TIP Community Lab in Madrid for CI/CD with partners such as Tech Mahindra and Altiostar to help with this challenge. Given that the telecoms industry is not inventing a new methodology, rather it is just applying a trend and tested methodology – although it is new to telcos – Telefonica doesn’t anticipate many problems.
