Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (00:06):
Hi, Tony Poulos here at Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona. Today I have with me Enrico Salvatori, who is a senior vice president and president of Qualcomm Europe. Enrico, welcome. Great to catch up with you today,

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (00:21):
Tony. Thank you. Happy to be with you.

Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (00:24):
I'm really interested to find out about what is the importance of on-device ai. We're hearing a lot about ai, but what about on-device ai?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (00:33):
On device AI is complimenting what we already receive AI from the cloud. So it is an important element to have end to hand performance and optimizing the AI service and application thanks to the contribution of the device. So we qualcomm our focus on that part of the AI development and we increase more and more hardware performance into the device to allow them to run the AI inference in particular that is complimenting what the cloud is doing.

Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (01:11):
And how is Qualcomm enabling OEMs, developers and industries with the technology and tools to deliver on AI's promise? And there are

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (01:20):
A lot of promises. So Qualcomm is focusing on AI on device. This is part of the hybrid AI with cloud and device working together to deliver the best AI performance. We welcome in particular offer platform hardware on the device that is able to provide the NPU performance. So neural processor unit needed to run the AI algorithm, the AI inference in the device. On top of that, we enable the application developers to develop their own apps for ai thanks to our AI hub portal that is giving them access to model, access to work hardware, ship set platform they want to use. They develop the application and then they can test it real time getting performance and can optimize the ai. So this is to complete ecosystem hybrid AI cloud on device and applications.

Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (02:27):
And Qualcomm of course is a major player in AI chip development for various sectors such as automotive, mobile and computing. But what are the unique challenges and opportunities within each of those

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (02:39):
Sectors? When we talk about AI on device? Device could be all the kind of device. So for factor smartphone, first of all, pc, the car vehicle and also industry devices. So horizontally we provide this AI on device performance to multiple sectors of the industry. Challenges and opportunities. Of course we see big traction already in automotive because the user experience in the car is richer thanks to the AI gen AI in particular. So you can talk to the car, you can get from the car, what's going on, what is not working, where, why, and so on. The car can make the appointment for you to the garage in order to have the solution. But also AI as a ui. So AI agent in the smartphone that is enabling us to access all the application, all the data stored in the device, but without doing us as a user all the action. But having the AI agent in the middle is an overlay that is for us doing all the action needed to send picture, email, WhatsApp, logo, instant message according what we want to achieve. So those are the opportunities. Challenges. Challenges is definitely having more application for AI available and that's why we invested in AI portal in the AI hub in order to enable the application developers to get access to this new technology models hardware to deliver a ecosystem of applications.

Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (04:21):
Well we are at a big telecoms conference of course. And given the increasing interest in AI ran, how is Qualcomm integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning into its ran solutions?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (04:33):
Of course we covered AI in terms of user experience, in terms of impact on how we do stuff in a faster, better, easy way. But AI is also helping the technology itself. The run Orran is a good example, meaning that the AI processor is optimizing coverage, is optimizing the energy consumption of the device of the network, is optimizing access to the technicians to understand what's going on and making also some self maintenance, self decision about the network optimization. So this is embedded in the technology. It's not something that we see as a UI or experience, but is a big, big help. Big step up. I think for instance, we are here at the show announcing the new modem X 85 that is not just a modern but is including also AI processor to optimize speed consumption coverage. So this is how AI can help the products, not only the users.

Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (05:49):
And what is the company's vision in the future of AI ran and its potential on the broader telecommunications industry?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (05:56):
Well, AI definitely is making an impact. Also on the run we have a product, edgewise Dragon Wing is the new name brand for the product. That is really acting as a agent for the operators to understand performance of the network, optimize the performance of the network, making a lot of decision based on the statistics, based on the use of the network optimization spectrum capacity. So that is how the, our product, this is the H Y's product, is enabling the equivalent agent AI for network operations.

Tony Poulos, TelecomTV (06:42):
Enrique, it's been a pleasure talking with you today and it seems like Qualcomm is in almost every sector of our industry at the moment. You're turning up everywhere.

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (06:50):
Tony, thank you very much. Thank you.
