Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (00:07):
Hello and welcome to Barcelona for MWC 2024 where I am delighted to be joined by Enrico Salvatori. Enrico is Senior Vice President and President at Qualcomm Europe. Thank you so much for joining us.

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (00:22):
Thank you, Charlotte, for having me.

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (00:24):
So Qualcomm has obviously attended MWC for many, many years. So what's new in 2024? And I'm curious to have your take on the big conversation this year. It's about this race for AI supremacy. What's your view on it?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (00:39):
Yeah, definitely this year the team is ai. I think all the industry is declining the AI in different way. And for Qualcomm in particular, AI is the edge. AI, meaning the platform that is powering the device to have AI performance device gets me the smartphone, pc industry automation devices and cars. So all of that benefiting of these edge AI platforms that will work in combination with the cloud. So we are very proud to contribute and to power this new era of devices.

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (01:21):
The technology is evolving very quickly. So when we stand here next year, how far do you think we will have pushed the boundaries?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (01:29):
Well, definitely it's running very fast because we move from the edge computing, meaning giving power in terms of CPU, processor capacity in the device to the edge ai. So giving the power of AI to the device. Moving forward, we will continue developing the platform in order to support more and more AI functions that today is first of all focused on gene ai and will come more and more models to be supported by the devices and connectivity because the connectivity is a pillar of these AI era because the devices have to be connected to the cloud and the cloud has to be connected with the device. So this is two pillars, AI and edge computing together with the connectivity.

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (02:24):
And how do you feel the global telecom industries dealing currently with the onset of AI and its early deployment?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (02:32):
Well, very well, I would say because telecom industry is leveraging on the AI features to improve, evolve, more service application, user experience performance. So if you take a look to what we are doing in Qualcomm on the connectivity with the new products, we have an AI feature supporting model, ai, feature supporting wifi. So connectivity of course ai, the neural processor unit supporting the performance into the device, into the car, into the pc.

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (03:09):
So you have made several announcements today including some related to ai. Can you tell us more?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (03:14):
The announcement on AI today is focused on the AI app. That for us is an important element, a glue to combine this AI environment, cloud devices, edge ai, meaning that is a tool for application developers going to these AI app portal. They can select which model they want to use for AI and which platform hardware, Qualcomms Snap dragon for smartphone, for a PC for a car they want to select. Then they can integrate with the fuel line of software, code, the application into the AI environment, hardware and software and deliver to the market because that will be tested on a real physical device by the AI app portal. So it is a tool for the application developers to make sure that not only technology will continue marching fast in terms of AI edge and connectivity and cloud, but also the application developers can get easily access to this environment and make it available in the devices. So

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (04:26):
Has central or important is AI to your strategy at Qualcomm?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (04:31):
AI is definitely super important because it's creating a new generation of devices that again is across the board is horizontal and that implies a new platform for all those devices. But at the same time, I want to stress the importance of connectivity because connectivity is a pillar to this AI era. Without the connectivity with low latency like the 5G, without the wifi seven evolution coming, wifi eight and the 5G moving to six G, there will be no opportunity to continue connecting objects but intelligent objects with the cloud. And so making sure that the coordination and performance and at the end of the day user experience is optimized and improved.

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (05:27):
Indeed the connectivity conversation is moving very quickly. Do you feel that somehow AI has trumped the industry's priorities when it comes to the development of 5G and looking forward that of six G, do you think that you need to remind the industry of how important connectivity is to the deployment of ai?

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (05:46):
Well, I don't think connectivity is not receiving the same level of attention. Investment r and d that AI is receiving of AI is the new element, new technology. So is attracting attention and I would say curiosity by the market, but connectivity is there. Connectivity, we welcome in particular here are presenting and announcing two products that are in connectivity, the 5G model, seventh generation X 80 is the part number name that is introducing more feature set by leveraging on AI for power efficiency, spectrum efficiency six antenna in the smartphone. So it is a more and more improving the performance also because of ai, but also the 7,900 that is the wifi platform we are announcing here. So Qualcomm is coming with announcement on connectivity in say parity with announcement on ai.

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (06:48):
Okay. Enrico, thank you very much.

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm (06:50):
Thank you Charlotte.

Charlotte Kan, TelecomTV (06:51):
Thank you.
