Many of the underlying technologies of NFV have now been fixed and aspects of the technology are ready for tests and deployment. By Q1 or Q2 next year, we should start to see commercial deployments of low-level NFV solutions, but the added complexity of high-level solutions for telcos will take longer.
Telcos, including Telefonica, are most likely to roll out NFV in stages, starting with the more straightforward solutions. They can also refer to their previous experiences with the move from ATM architectures to IP, where change was gradual and not too disruptive to their business.
