Is the industry spending too much time coding, not enough time writing specs?

With so much focus on Network Functions Virtualisation, is it time for an NFV reality check? Will NFV and SDN really solve all the problems faced by today’s telcos? “No,” says Shahar Steiff. NFV and SDN are just enablers for the real goal, which is new revenue streams. And to get to those, the industry needs a way to offer on-demand, assured, deliverable services. That in turn can only be done through end-to-end orchestration of services across network boundaries. That means there has to be a focus back on standards. Open source is all very well, but there’s a danger that without a guiding specification the process is like herding cats. We need to write more standards and less code.
