Dr. Jai Menon, VP and Chief Research Officer, Dell

Virtualisation in the data centre took about 8-10 years, so don't expect NFV to transform the network in just a few years. That said, SDN and NFV allows software developers, who know nothing about telecoms networking, to come in and provide capabilities to service providers which would be impossible previously in an industry controlled by a handful of specialist vendors. Network operators could provide infrastructure to enable content caching, or they could provide seamless mobility management for enterprises BYOD. But the truth is, says Jai Menon, someone out there will produce something that none of us could expect - that is the power of SDN and NFV.
