NFV is a relatively straightforward transformation, but SDN - at least outside of the data centre - is a little more abstract in terms of its value proposition. However, it is gaining traction as the network become more application-centric. With NFV distributing the intelligence around the network, the network becomes more flexible and traffic patterns become harder to predict, which is where SDN fits in.
