Businesses need just Deutsche Telekom’s starter kit to take their first step into the Internet of Things (IoT). The package contains sensors, software and hardware, and connects them via mobile network with the cloud. At Hannover Messe, Deutsche Telekom will be using the example of a "Digitized Construction Container" to show how a complete package like this can protect against theft. The container is fitted with a variety of sensors through which it can be monitored remotely via an Internet portal. A number of camera and contact sensors detect all movements around and inside the container, helping to prevent the theft of machines, equipment and vehicles from construction sites, for example.

The IoT starter package consists of a small box with an integrated mobile telephony modem, a SIM card and software for local data processing, a special data rate plan, various sensors, and access to the IoT platform in the central data center. The box gathers all of the information from the sensors, analyzes it and sends it over the Deutsche Telekom mobile network into the cloud. There, it is saved in a secure data center, where it is processed and set up for display. Package users will then have access to the information from any computer, smartphone or tablet PC via an online portal.

The contact sensors will immediately detect if someone tries to open the doors or windows by force. The package also lets the user record and control the temperature in the container using sensors. In addition, it monitors construction vehicles by recording their GPS data and transmitting the information into the cloud. If anyone should attempt to move a digger outside working hours, or if a vehicle should be removed from the site, the built-in hardware module will transmit an alarm. Users will also see on-screen if unauthorized persons enter the site during the night, or where a missing wheel loader is currently located.

Cisco provides the mobile telephony modem with integrated sensor analysis, and the cloud solution is based on Cisco's Intercloud. The fact that the data is saved and processed in the high-security data center in Biere, near Magdeburg in central Germany, means that strict European rules on data protection apply – which is an absolute must for many customers when it comes to working in the cloud.
