Fleet Xpress helps fishing vessel gain IoT advantage

21 August 2018: A new Inmarsat case study demonstrates how connected vessels can benefit from the Internet of Things (IoT).

The 75m Norwegian fishing vessel Volstad is equipped with the latest automation technology to make landing and processing its catch as efficient as possible. But being away at sea for up to six weeks at a time means it cannot wait until it is back in port for any equipment problems to be fixed.

Having Fleet Xpress onboard means suppliers can monitor and maintain equipment remotely using intelligent sensors. Being able to rely on continuous, high-speed internet connectivity even in the high north of the Barents Sea also allows the vessel to send regular catch reporting updates to shore-based teams; and keeps morale high for the 18-20 strong crew.
