CEN, CENELEC, ETSI, the European Commission and EFTA organize third Indo-European conference on standards and emerging technology

Today, CEN, CENELEC, ETSI along with the European Commission (EC) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), in the framework of their Project SESEI (Seconded European Standardization Expert in India) and in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), organized the third Indo-European conference on Standards and Emerging Technologies, held in New Delhi, India.

This conference brought together technical experts from the European Standards Organizations and Indian stakeholders from local standards bodies, government and industry, as well as policy makers from Europe. The event presented the audience with an overview of three key European and Indian standardization work areas, namely ICT, automotive and smart energy, while reporting on the state of play in India on those specific topics.

CEN and CENELEC’s participation in this event was a good opportunity for both organizations to promote the visibility of their activities in the three above-mentioned topics as well as to network with their Indian counterparts, especially in the context of the ongoing negotiations for the conclusion of a cooperation agreement with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).

Elena Santiago Cid, CEN and CENELEC Director General, stated: “Over the past 10 years, the value of EU exports to India has increased by 50 %. In this context, standardization plays a pivotal role in extending the reach of European industries and promoting the European Standardization System to India as well as international and European deliverables. The SESEI project is therefore a relevant tool to support these objectives, and CEN and CENELEC very much welcome the organization of this conference which will provide the opportunity to share insights on development of these technologies and identify potential areas for future cooperation for the benefits of both industries and their citizens.”

Luis Jorge Romero, ETSI Director General, stated: “The project SESEI is a key element in ensuring awareness of ETSI activities and in a broader way of the European Standardization System and its deliverables. With the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) working alongside ETSI in the 3GPP and oneM2M partnership projects for mobile telecommunications and Internet of Things (IoT) standards, the Indo-European collaboration is a prime example of a successful path to follow. This event will allow stakeholders to enhance their mutual understanding while keeping the specific Indian and European needs in mind.”

“India-EU cooperation on standards, focusing on the important fields of ICT, automotive and smart energy, will boost innovation and competitiveness and contribute to the success of 'Make in India' through the facilitation of exports. Global standards provide for interoperable products, solutions and services. I am convinced that the 3rd Indo-European Conference on Standards and Emerging Technology will make an important contribution to these important goals" said H.E. Tomasz Kozlowski, Ambassador of the European Union to India & Bhutan.

This third conference explored trending topics and policy needs for India and Europe. The agenda covered M2M/IoT technologies and their role in smart cities and cybersecurity as well as smart energy with smart grid, smart meter, LVDC, and Micro Grid. Other sessions addressed the automotive sector with ITS and e-mobility. The conference was also the opportunity to issue study reports on those topics, available through the SESEI project website.
