New Kit from AT&T and Avnet Inc. Helps IoT Tech Innovators Launch Solutions to Market Faster

AT&T* is introducing an all-in-one IoT Starter Kit to help developers jumpstart their Internet of Things (IoT) projects. The AT&T IoT Starter Kit provides all the tools needed for IoT innovation, including connectivity, LTE hardware, application services, cloud storage and more.

The IoT Starter Kit provides everything needed to help developers take advantage of next-generation 4G LTE connectivity, enabling tech innovators to create IoT solutions quickly and efficiently. This “plug and play” model means developers no longer need to purchase technology from multiple vendors to get a new IoT project started. They now have the complete package to build their solutions from scratch.

The new IoT Starter Kit includes:

  • An AT&T Global SIM that works in 200+ countries and territories.
  • An LTE modem that runs on the AT&T LTE network.
  • Access to AT&T Control Center, an industry-leading IoT connectivity management platform.
  • An expandable development board that works with a wide range of plug-in sensors.
  • An API to monitor the network connection and data transfer.
  • REST APIs, including easy-to-follow documentation and the ability to quickly test APIs without any coding.
  • Cloud storage to host, manage and share data across multiple groups.
  • Access to AT&T Flow Designer which helps developers launch IoT apps in minutes.
  • Microcontroller carrier board with Arduino™ compatible expansion slot

“Developers are the ones driving innovation in the IoT industry,” said Chris Penrose, senior vice president, AT&T IoT Solutions. “Our new IoT Starter Kit creates a faster and easier way for them to create IoT solutions. We’re now offering a one-stop shop to help transform their ideas into impactful IoT services.”

“One of the biggest barriers getting started with IoT is choosing from rapidly changing hardware and software” said Mike Reich, CEO of Sensamo, a leading-edge IoT development company and AT&T customer. “Because the Starter Kit provides the leading IoT technology and ‘just works', we can focus our development time on what makes our product unique. What used to take days can now be done in hours."

AT&T is working closely with Avnet and Cisco to produce the IoT Starter Kit. Developers will have access to AT&T Control Center, the IoT service platform from Cisco, to manage their connected devices.

By offering Control Center to all developers, the IoT Starter Kit helps accelerate entry and growth in the fast-growing IoT market across industries. Control Center provides a highly secure and reliable way to provision and manage your IoT devices, at low cost, helping your customers enjoy with the best experience possible.

AT&T is offering variations of the IoT Starter Kit that work with other leading third-party IoT solutions. This includes versions made specifically for developers using IBM Watson IoT and the Microsoft Azure IoT Suite – which also integrate with the Cisco IoT service platform.

“The Internet of Things is not about ‘things’ – it’s about service,” said Martyn Etherington, Head of IoT Cloud Marketing at Cisco. “IoT developers play a critical role in the development of applications that deliver new, valuable services through connected devices. With this all-in-one Starter Kit, we’re helping to accelerate IoT success for developers looking to build or enable connected service businesses.”

“The AT&T IoT Starter Kit builds on a world-class ecosystem of technology product and service providers to create a solution that tackles some of the biggest challenging facing IoT systems developers today, including cost, scalability and security,” said Tim Barber, senior vice president, global design chain business development, Avnet Electronics Marketing. “Avnet’s role in developing, supporting and fulfilling this kit is a prime example of our edge-to-enterprise commitment to making our customers’ most bleeding-edge IoT visions a reality.”

The new IoT Starter Kit will be available from AT&T or Avnet for only $99 plus applicable taxes and fees beginning August 2016.[1] And developers will use the Starter Kits during the hackathon at SHAPE in San Francisco.
