Richard Porter, Head of Smart Home Product & Partnerships Telefónica

Richard Porter explains that the age of the connected home really is about to dawn. The leading research house Gartner reckons that by 2020 Smart Homes will be by far and away the biggest and most important category of Smart City connected 'things'. The trend is being driven by a diverse yet associated set of circumstances including the reducing prices of devices from an increasing number of vendors, the ever greater availability of broadband, better connectivity, greatly improved interoperability of solutions, the need to husband and manage energy much more carefully and effectively. However, It is evident that no one company on its own can provide both the base platform and all the necessary components, devices, services and applications that the connected home/smart home sector will require if it is to be successful, hence the the emergence of powerful partnerships and ecosystems to solve the problem.
