Three myths about network automation

By Guy Daniels

Featuring: Andrew Coward, CEO, Lumina Networks

Many network automation projects are started with a single goal – orchestrate a new service, automate top-of-rack switch deployments, or automatically create trouble tickets. Yet by themselves, these goals do not constitute an automation strategy.

Each automation project needs to address the provision of network elements,
the telemetry and decision-making process, task-oriented workflows and how to apply new applications to the network. By not looking at the problem holistically (choosing instead to position quick fixes for individual elements) then we see an increase in the abandonment rate of automation projects in network operators.

Andrew Coward highlights three approaches taken by vendors that are the direct cause of much of this angst – that you can deploy orchestration without SDN, that overlays simplify automation, and that workflow tools make network upgrades easy.
