KPN and pension fund ABP have today received approval from the regulator ACM for the collaboration in the area of acquisition and management of passive infrastructure for mobile networks. This means that approximately 3,800 mobile transmission towers and roof locations from KPN, NOVEC, and Open Tower Company will soon be placed in a joint venture.
The passive infrastructure of the new company provides space for mobile radio and antenna equipment and has a fine-mesh grid of antenna sites with transmission towers and roof locations spread across the Netherlands that remains accessible to various mobile operators and other frequency users.
With this collaboration, KPN and ABP aim to maintain the strong position of Dutch mobile internet, which is among the best in the world. The space for transmission towers is becoming increasingly scarce, which has implications for both the realization of new sites and the replacement of existing locations. For this reason, KPN and ABP are joining forces, which should result in future-proof use of the various locations, harmonization, and simplification of lease contracts.
