ZTE 5G facilitating VR video transmission and real-time remote control for submarine scientific expedition

5 June 2017, Shenzhen, China – ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, today announced it will showcase its remote control service for 5G VR underwater vehicles at the 5G World Summit 2017, London. Through VR real-time video transmission and wireless remote control, the demonstration will simulate underwater scenarios, such as offshore submarine scientific expeditions and maintenance, to showcase the breakthroughs of 5G application in underwater research and unmanned operations.

In the absence of high-bandwidth short-delay wireless transmission, professionals have to travel to a specific location for underwater expeditions and maintenance. However, in the deep sea and environments with strong wind and big waves, it is difficult for maintenance personnel and scientists to get close to the failure location, causing great difficulty in scientific research and maintenance. Due to the narrow bandwidth and large delay in existing wireless networks, underwater HD video cannot be transmitted in real time. 5G networks featuring ultra-high bandwidth and short delay make VR services and real-time remote control available, involving the use of remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in submarine expedition and underwater maintenance, substantially changing and enhancing the mode and value of wireless network services.

In addition to the demonstration of the remote control over 5G VR underwater vehicles, ZTE will also showcase its latest research and development (R&D) achievements in the 5G field, including a full range of 5G high-frequency and low-frequency pre-commercial base stations, a new generation of Pre5G Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) base stations, and 5G network and evolution solutions. ZTE's 5G experts will also deliver keynote speeches on network slicing and 5G air interfaces and share innovative viewpoints on 5G technologies.

ZTE works extensively with many industry partners to actively explore and create an open and harmonious ecosystem. ZTE has also joined groups such as the 5GIA and 5GAA, conducted jointly with Qualcomm and China Mobile low-frequency interoperability development testing (IoDT) meeting the 3GPP standards, and developed high-frequency equipment together with Intel, promoting sound development of the 5G ecosystem.
