Preparing for 5G - Ericsson and Intel open Hyperscale Lab

2017-02-24

Ericsson is expanding its collaboration with Intel by establishing a Hyperscale Customer Experience Lab in Gdansk, Poland. The customer experience lab is an ecosystem initiative to activate the market and will be used for technical cooperation, ecosystem development and customer onboarding.

The lab serves as a foundation for joint market activation of Ericsson solutions based on Intel® Rack Scale Design and is further proof of the industry-wide adoption, including momentum for networking solutions as the industry prepares for 5G. The next generation of mobile networking must do more than increase capacity and speed, it must be more intelligent, efficient, scalable, and software-defined. This is the mission of 5G, and the industry requires a new approach to digital infrastructure to power the needs of forthcoming 5G devices.

13 major IT infrastructure providers have announced adoption of systems based on Intel® Rack Scale Design. Ericsson has 26 Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000 customers in all geographic areas.

Jason Hoffman, Head of Product Area Cloud Infrastructure, Ericsson, says:

“The eco-system is clearly growing. We need to build IT infrastructure that meets tomorrow’s needs rather than create new legacy products. With Ericsson Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000 and Intel® Rack Scale Design, we are transforming our own business using this technology, and we are happy to see others following the same approach."

“We’re excited to be working with Ericsson to accelerate market adoption of Intel® Rack Scale Design,” said Charles Wuischpard, Vice President Data Center Group and General Manager Scalable Datacenter Solutions Group at Intel. “Data-intensive services are stressing traditional architectures and 5G promises to add even more data centric capabilities. Intel® Rack Scale Design is the agile and compose-able architecture that delivers the hyperscale flexibility and TCO that communication providers need to drive innovation. We look forward to working with Ericsson to solve their customers’ growing computing needs.”

The ITU/3GPP has three major pillars as part of the 5G use cases – ultra reliable low latency networks, Massive Machine type communications and enhanced mobile broadband1 . In addition, multiple types of spectrum are addressed by the standardization efforts. As a result, it is anticipated that 5G is an inflection point versus an evolution of mobile smartphone services, because it opens up a wide range of IOT, device and fixed wireless capabilities.
