13 February 2015, Moscow. One year ago MegaFon launched LTE roaming for Russian subscribers, meaning they can use mobile Internet abroad at the same high speed as they have in their home region. Since then, MegaFon has launched 4G roaming in 40 countries around the world, solidifying its leading position in Russia and becoming one of the top global leaders by the number of countries where LTE roaming is available.
Countries with 4G roaming account for approximately 60% of MegaFon subscribers’ international roaming Internet traffic. According to company figures, subscribers use mobile Internet when travelling mainly to access social media (70%), check email (54%) and browse the web (44%).
“We are seeing a significant increase in data traffic in international roaming and endeavor to offer our clients the same speed they have at home as they travel around the world,” said Leonid Savkov, Marketing Director, MegaFon. “In just one year we have launched LTE roaming in 40 countries. Beginning with one or two countries a month, by the end of the year we were launching 4G roaming in a new country every week. We have no intention of slowing down this year and will expand the list of countries with 4G access.”
Popularity with subscribers is one of the main priorities when choosing countries with whose operators MegaFon should conclude roaming agreements. MegaFon 4G roaming is already available in half the countries in Europe (70% of which are in Western Europe) and in the most visited countries. For example, the most popular countries for MegaFon subscribers during the New Year holidays were France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Thailand. In all of these countries, clients could not only call and send messages but also enjoy high-speed 4G mobile Internet while travelling.
To do so, all they need is a smartphone or tablet that supports LTE. This technology is now supported by more than 100 device models, most of which can be purchased in MegaFon stores. To optimize data costs when roaming, MegaFon recommends using the Internet Abroad option, which can cut Internet costs several times over.
