Re-edited and remastered video feature, which was originally produced in February 2017, prior to the March 3GPP meeting. This new edition reflects the decision of the industry to accelerate 5g New Radio NSA standards.

At the 3GPP RAN meeting in Dubrovnik in March 2017, delegates were presented with a proposal from a large group of vendors and operators to accelerate the standardisation of so-called “non-standalone New Radio” for 5G.

In an unprecedented move, the G22 group went public with their demands on the eve of Mobile World Congress, saying that they wanted to introduce an “intermediate milestone” to complete specification documents related to a configuration called Non-Standalone 5G NR. The reason, they said, is to address the increasing global demand for enhanced mobile broadband services with 5G NR in 2019, while continuing to address the broader vision for 5G NR in 2020 and beyond.

But not all operators and vendors agreed. During the MWC event – less than a week before the Dubrovnik vote – TelecomTV sought the views and opinions of both sides of the argument, together with insights from 3GPP and ETSI.

In the end, the proposal was accepted by a majority of 3GPP members, including Telefonica, which changed sides to vote for acceleration.
