OpenDaylight: creating a common substrate for networking

The big challenge to automation (which is the goal of SDN) is that the cost of fragmentation goes up exponentially as control is centralised, explains Neela Jacques, executive director of OpenDaylight. That, in a nutshell, is where OpenDaylight comes in. It aims to provide a common substrate (a sort of open, distributed operating system) so that applications (and real value) can be built on top.
