Video puts a tremendous strain on mobile operator networks - growing to account for 72% of all mobile data traffic by 2019, according to Cisco's Visual Networking Index report. Operators face severe challenges in managing video traffic. Most of the content comes from over-the-top (OTT) providers and is thus outside their control, and an increasing amount of that content is encrypted (as much as 80%, according to some sources), making it difficult to apply traditional compression and transcoding techniques.
