Telstra recently completed a proof-of-concept (PoC) program with the Wind River Titanium Cloud network virtualization platform. The project showcased interoperability between the Titanium Cloud platform, DellEMC servers and several virtual network functions (VNFs). The proof-of-concept was showcased at the Telstra Engineering Symposium held on November 2, 2017.
Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications company, offers a full range of communications services for all telecommunications market segments. In Australia, Telstra provide 17.4 million mobile services, 6.8 million fixed voice services and 3.5 million retail fixed broadband services. They also have an international presence spanning over 20 countries.
Eager to advance their NFV goals like many others in the industry, Telstra is interested in the new business opportunities and operational efficiencies enabled by virtualization. The opportunities to more rapidly and flexibly deploy new services and optimize resources for greater cost efficiency are especially attractive.
One of the key objectives of the PoC was to show three-layer decoupling (VNF, virtualization and hardware layers) via the running of several different VNFs and Dell servers on Titanium Cloud with management by an open source MANO platform.
Together with Wind River, Telstra created a test lab that included a simulated network in a data center environment. DellEMC deployed a management and orchestration (MANO) platform called Cloudify, based on open source and the Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) model. Cloudify was used to manage the Titanium Cloud NFVI platform. Four nodes ran on Wind River Titanium Core (for a data center PoP) and two nodes ran on Wind River Titanium Edge (running a Lean-POP ).
With this successful PoC completed, we look forward to working with Telstra on future collaborations.
