Huawei proposes business-centric video broadband to promote mobile video for everyone

[Shanghai, China, July 1, 2016] At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2016 yesterday, Andy Ma, Director of Huawei Wireless Network Planning Department, gave a keynote speech about "Mobile Video for Everyone". In his speech, he said that as mobile video is gaining popularity as an inevitable trend, operators can choose a proper model for mobile video development and implement business-centric video broadband.

It is an inevitable trend that video is becoming more mobile, social, and personal. Video everywhere at any time will contribute to a basic requirement of users, and video will deliver essential services of mobile operators. GSMA predicts that the proportion of mobile video traffic will reach 70% by 2020. This means that those equipped with the ability to provide video services will obtain a competitive advantage.
However, with a growing demand for mobile videos, the world faces unbalanced video service development. Andy Ma illustrated three key instrumental operation models for mobile video services proven widely successful.
Model 1: Collaborating with OTT players for win-win development. OTT players provide video content and operators offer directional traffic packages and free video services with limited experience to promote video services. These activities help to achieve a triple-win ecosystem for users, operators, and OTT players.
Model 2: Building video platforms. Operators offer differentiated video content and self-owned video apps to charge video services by traffic and content, achieving business successes.
Model 3: Building a multi-win ecosystem for the video industry chain. Operators provide entertainment, communication, vertical industry videos, and ensure fixed and mobile networks convergence for the provision of video services, through close cooperation with industry chain partners to develop new video content and charging models, achieving multi-win development of the industry chain.
Operators can choose an appropriate model for mobile video development based on the business climate, user behavior, and industry chain maturity in the applicable local country.
Compared with traditional MBB services, video services have higher requirements on network capabilities, for example, flexible charging, content aggregation, storage, and distribution, a reduced E2E delay, and higher network transmission rate. As most operators expect to play an increasingly important role in the mobile video industry chain, higher requirements are imposed on content aggregation, operation, and experience. Huawei proposed the concept of video broadband to meet operator requirements on network architecture design, content aggregation, and experience standard for video services. This will allow users to enjoy additional video content and provide an improved video experience at beneficially modest prices.
MWC Shanghai 2016 takes place in Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC), China, from June 29th to July 1st.
