Doubles the Number of Open APIs for Industry's Most Broadly Deployed Switching Platform

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced the second release of the Broadcom Open Network Switch Library (OpenNSL), the industry's most complete collection of open network application programming interfaces (APIs). With double the number of production-ready Open APIs now available, OpenNSL 2.0 enables the development of innovative open source networking projects on Broadcom's best-in-class silicon platforms.

The new version of OpenNSL helps customers to accelerate time to market, and share innovation across a wide range of switch platforms. Since its initial launch in March 2015, OpenNSL has quickly gained broad industry support and enabled the rapid deployment of open network operating systems including HP OpenSwitch.  Broadcom is also working with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), large data center customers and cloud providers to support a wider set of use cases.

"Broadcom's OpenNSL APIs enable a broad developer ecosystem to address the emerging requirements for next-generation networking equipment," said Nick Kucharewski, Broadcom Vice President, Network Switch Marketing.  "Our latest OpenNSL release expands the Broadcom switch innovations available to the developer community, and will enable the most comprehensive feature-set among open-networking platforms."

"OpenSwitch is a significant project for cloud networking and the open source ecosystem," said Tom Black, Vice President of Research and Development, HP Networking. "In support of the OpenSwitch efforts, Broadcom's OpenNSL can help customers with demanding cloud applications expedite time-to-market by providing a complete set of qualified software drivers and proven switch silicon."

OpenNSL 2.0 has over 100 new APIs that support new features such as:

  • L2/L3/VLAN management
  • Link monitoring
  • Packet transmit and Receive
  • Port and switch management
  • Spanning tree
  • Statistics
  • Error handling
  • Buffer Statistics Tracking
