The "Open" movement: Just one big, happy, extended family

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) is a not-for-profit, collaborative, user-driven trade organisation that came into being because of the recognition that network virtualisation and cloudification is blurring the distinctions between computers and networks. It's aim is to improve networking via the development of SDN and open standards and the ONF is funded by some important industry players including Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Verizon, and Yahoo. As Dan Pitt explains, the many and various "open" initiatives, groups and standards bodies are a prime example of the increasing incidence of communities and ecosystems that collaborating together as a direct result of virtualisation and network transformation
