Lloyd Mphahlele, GM of Group Technology, MTN

To help address the complexity of the multivendor telecom environment, MTN turned to open networking and disaggregation. The operator has been collaborating with other telcos on open optical packet transport networks and identifying use cases for software-defined networking (SDN) transport and open architectures. Lloyd Mphahlele talks us through MTN’s work with disaggregated cell site gateways (effectively open white box routers), which has now moved from lab trials to field trials in Uganda.
