Richard Mackenzie, Principal Researcher, BT

BT co-chairs the vRAN Fronthaul project within the Telecom Infra Project, which includes the UK hosting a TIP Community Lab and associated activities. It has completed two multi-vendor vRAN solutions in the lab and is now working with partners on a centralised controller for that vRAN. As well as the vRAN fronthaul work, BT is also involved in open RAN work within TIP and is moving on to trials. One of the most promising scenarios in the near term is for neutral hosts, where an open RAN solution provides a service for all four of the UK licensed mobile operators. But whilst BT has seen a number of commercially-ready vRAN components, it now wants to see a fully disaggregated RAN working end-to-end.
