Almost four years since the concept and potential of NFV first became appreciated in and by the global communications industry, widespread commercial deployments of the technology remain few and far between. They will come but perhaps not for a while yet. However, the virtual CPE is different. It is the most used NFV use-case to date. As Micaela Giuhat explains, vCPE is very effective because as it uses the best aspects and attributes of the NFV model even as it permits several functions to be run over a single platform. What's more the vCPE market is big, easy to understand and is important, not least because vCPE is the intersection of data VNFs and voice.
