Home automation on the rise

Dec 4, 2013

As Martyn Warwick and I ponder in an upcoming edition of Codgertations (back by popular demand) despite its numerous false starts the old home automation idea seems to be on the up again and the log-jam has been broken (if broken it is) by the everywhereness of Android which makes a handy user interface for people wanting to control their blinds, security systems, heating and so on. Android and of course pervasive broadband attached to WiFi.

One example, Enblink, was announced in August and is now available (an email tells me).

It plugs into any Google TV unit and lets you control lighting and other real world devices using a smartphone or tablet. It’s subscription free, installs in just a few minutes.

IT comes with a free companion app, which can be downloaded from Google Play which provides users with a familiar interface to control lighting, security, and climate control devices in the living room and around the house.

Because Enblink works with the existing hardware for the Google TV, it’s claimed to be one of the most affordable connected home solutions available.

Enblink is available for under $90. Orders can be placed at www.enblink.com.

Martyn also filmed a piece recently on another home solution. See below or click Defending the home from the Cloud.
