A brief overview of AT&T’s journey to virtualize 75% of its network functions by the end of 2020. Starting the journey over six years ago with immature technologies and many unknowns provided ample opportunity for AT&T to iterate and learn. While AT&T started the journey using virtual machine technology, the infrastructure control was migrated to container technology in order to address lifecycle management and scale challenges. Now that network functions themselves are migrating to container technology, the learnings from the infrastructure are being applied with the hope of achieving true cloud-native network functions. This network virtualization evolution can be accelerated through strong industry collaboration and vibrant open source.
