For Telefonica, moving from using proprietary technologies to off-the-shelf solutions is key to be able to do away with physical appliances as part of its virtualisation programme. Whilst many parts of the network currently still need physical appliances, virtualisation is well underway elsewhere as Telefonica evolves its network to be programmable and more versatile, and remaining competitive with rival cloud service providers. The new generation of network-optimised processors, such as Intel’s Cascade Lake, are very important for CSPs, as they need to demonstrate that these legacy physical appliances are able to be replaced without sacrificing performance.
