Spain steps into 5G Advanced with MasOrange and Ericsson

  • MasOrange and Ericsson deploy advanced 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions, powered by the existing Ericsson 5G Core deployment, across 20 key cities in Spain, bringing next-generation capabilities to consumers.
  • Powered by Ericsson’s 5G Advanced portfolio, this project delivers innovations such as 5G carrier aggregation for enhanced spectrum efficiency, RedCap for massive IoT adoption, and Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput (L4S) – part of Critical IoT – for time-critical applications.

MasOrange and Ericsson is driving a major nationwide upgrade with 5G Advanced radio access network (RAN) deployment across 20 cities in Spain. Ericsson supports MasOrange’s 5G Advanced rollout, building on a long-standing partnership with MasOrange to bring the next wave of 5G Advanced capabilities into commercial operation for consumers across the country.

The deployment is based on Ericsson’s 5G Advanced offerings, spread across its RAN and core networks portfolio, designed to evolve 5G from a connectivity platform into a service platform that supports more demanding, time-sensitive and diverse use cases. 5G Advanced builds on the foundation of 5G Standalone (5G SA) to deliver improved spectrum efficiency, higher capacity, lower and more deterministic latency, higher energy efficiency and broader support for a wide range of devices and applications. Key elements that are delivered include:

  • 5G carrier aggregation to improve spectrum efficiency and deployment flexibility for better user experience and capacity management.
  • RedCap (Reduced Capability): NR Light software to support a wider range of device types with lower complexity and cost, accelerating massive adoption of connected devices.
  • L4S to enable time-critical applications over 5G that will ensure consistent low latency, crucial for applications like real-time video, AR/VR, and cloud gaming.

5G Advanced enabled in MasOrange’s 5G SA network will drive a new wave of commercial opportunities across XR, remote control, mobility automation, and RedCap devices that will bring exciting innovation possibilities to the 5G era in Spain. In addition to the introduction of 5G Advanced throughout Spain, MasOrange and Ericsson are collaborating in the rollout of Voice over New Radio (VoNR) in the country - providing high-definition voice, video and data communications over the 5G SA network.

The rollout has been completed in 20 Spanish cities including major cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, where consumers could already benefit from the new 5G Advanced features.

The enhanced network capabilities enabled by 5G Advanced technology could support a range of new and innovative services and opportunities that elevates consumer experience. For example, faster streaming, cloud-gaming, or AR/VR experiences with smart glasses/wearables for shopping, sightseeing and education.

This milestone represents an important step toward a fuller 5G experience for MasOrange customers, that will underpin the next phase of digital services and industrial transformation in Spain.

“We're proud to support MasOrange in Spain with Ericsson 5G Advanced — delivering faster, more reliable and spectrum efficient connectivity. With intelligent automation and advanced radio features, MasOrange will enable ultralow latency, broader coverage and immersive experiences, cut costs and unlock new revenues to drive digital transformation in Spain”, said Thibaud Rérolle, head of networks, Ericsson West Europe.
