Globe booked a massive 27x increase in monthly data traffic on its 5G network this year, growing by as much as 35.2% month-on-month, with National Capital Region (NCR), Cebu, and Davao del Sur, serving the highest data traffic nationwide. For the full year of 2021, Globe has served up to 6.71 petabytes of data in its 5G network.
The growth in data traffic resulted from the massive improvement in Globe’s 5G network rollout in areas where it matters. In addition, Globe has come out with 5G-specific data offers and budget-friendly 5G devices, making it easier for customers to access the service.
As of end-December 2021, Globe logged over 1.62 million devices in its 5G network, as it reaches 96% of NCR and 84% of key VisMin cities in terms of 5G coverage.
"5G allows us to serve the growing demand for high speed mobile broadband, especially with the rise of data-intensive applications. It elevates our customers' digital lifestyle while boosting our network efficiency and effectiveness", said Marge Dizon, Vice President for Program Delivery, Network Technical Group.
With speeds up to 7x faster than that of 4G, 5G technology offers the fastest mobile connectivity and download speeds at present. It also has ultra-low latency, greater bandwidth, superior network reliability, and the ability to connect to more devices.
Globe is the pioneer in 5G technology in the Philippines and the first mobile operator in Southeast Asia to commercially launch 5G AirFiber for Home in 2019. It introduced 5G for mobile last year and continues to expand its coverage nationwide.
To fortify its leadership in the mobile segment, Globe earmarked an unprecedented capital expenditure program in 2021, bulk of which was used for data network expansion to cope with surging demand brought about by the pandemic.
It has fired up more than 2,000 5G cell sites and upgraded 12,900 cell towers nationwide to provide #1stWorldNetwork to Filipinos all over the country. Of the total number of 5G sites, over 1,400 cell sites are in Luzon, over 300 are in the Visayas, and over 230 are in Mindanao.
In its latest report titled “5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 202[1],” Opensignal tagged Globe among the top 30 operators globally for 5G Global Impact. It said Globe users saw a marked improvement or uplift in mobile experience with 5G compared to 4G across all four measurements, including Download Speed, Upload Speed, Games Experience, and Video Experience.
