Deutsche Telekom commissions over 300 new LTE mobile base stations

  • Around 51,000 additional households can access the LTE network
  • Main beneficiary is North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) with 77 new LTE base stations

Deutsche Telekom’s LTE network is growing rapidly. Over 300 new LTE mobile base stations have been commissioned in the past eight weeks. With these base stations, Deutsche Telekom has aggregated and expanded its network. Around 51,000 households can now access Deutsche Telekom’s LTE network for the first time. Most strongly 3,400 households profit in Kaufungen (Hessians). Wolfschlugen (Baden-Württemberg) follows with 2,200 households. With 77 new LTE base stations, NRW is the primary beneficiary of this build-out, followed by Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, each with 40 base stations.

“We keep on driving forward the expansion of the mobile communication network. That is important also with look onto the future 5G standard”, says Walter Goldenits, Chief Technology Officer at Telekom Deutschland. “LTE will remain the basis for further development of the mobile communications network for years to come. We must therefore continue to pursue the rollout of LTE, so we can provide our customers with the best possible network, anytime, anywhere wherever possible.”

Outlook for mobile communications

Deutsche Telekom will raise the number of mobile base stations in Germany from 29,000 currently to 36,000 in 2021. The LTE build-out will help Deutsche Telekom fill coverage gaps in mobile communications and increase bandwidths. The share of population served with LTE is scheduled to increase to 98 percent in 2019.

This build-out is an important component for the future 5G network. 5G is the standard for communications in the future. It combines fixed-network and mobile communications. Deutsche Telekom is playing an important role in the development of this global standard.
