The shock of Brexit took Europe by surprise and and forced the EU take a long hard look at itself. Ulf Ewaldsson says that, in as far as the European telecoms industry is concerned, the lack of unity between different EIU member states is striking and worrying. He adds that a result of this evident disunity Europe is losing ground to other parts of the world especially in areas such as regulation, investment and R&D. To bolster his argument, Ulf Ewaldsson points out that while 2018 will see very large field trials of 5G in the Far East and the US, Europe's contribution will will and insignificant partial by comparison. He also points out that 5G was developed as a technology not only for human interaction at the consumer and business-to-business level but also, and very importantly, for application beyond human intervention and for other industries to connect to it. The question is, how?
