Ben Ward, CEO, Flood Network

The Flood Network started as an IoT-based project for individuals in the UK, but quickly became a valuable service for local government authorities. Using a low-cost network of sensors, it provides new calibration data for existing flood models, communicating over LoRaWAN and also using TV White Space spectrum for backhaul. It’s a successful example of how a “hobbyist” network using short-range wireless to connect to home broadband gateways evolved into a nationwide IoT service. It also showcases the different approaches to monetising data – as well as collecting data, the challenge is how you can also sell on data to third parties.
