Klaus Schaaf, the Project Director of Wireless Wolfsburg AG, explains how the German city worked with Volkswagen to create a planned smart city. So successful has the project been that work has commenced on the creation of a ‘smart region’ whereby towns and major cities will be joined together by various communications technologies including small cells, Wi-Fi, 3G, LTE, and, in due course, 5G.
