Hello and welcome to TelecomTV. I'm James Pearce and I'm in Vienna for Network X. I'm delighted to be joined today by Takehiro Nakamura, who's from NTT DOCOMO. Thank you so much for joining us. Let's start with the 6G Promotion Project, which you're a key part of. What is it and what are some of its latest developments that our audience should know about?
Takehiro Nakamura, NTT DOCOMO (00:25):
Okay. Yeah. 6G Promotion Project is one of the projects in the XG Mobile Promotion Forum in Japan. And especially 6G Promotion Project is leading the overall discussion of the 6G in the XGMF. And we have some projects on the 6G and my 6G promotion project lead the collaboration among the project to accelerate our 6G activities initiatives. And also international collaboration is also very important topic. And my 6G promotion projects are taking care about such kind of the international global collaboration, especially in Europe, for example, 6G-IA or Next G Alliance in US and so on.
James Pearce, TelecomTV (01:24):
So sticking with 6G, what are some of the key developments that we should be looking out for in 6G over the next few years?
Takehiro Nakamura, NTT DOCOMO (01:31):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, AI. AI native 6G, AI native network is one of the most hottest topic of course, as you know. But many, many AI topics we need to treat for the 6G. Mainly, we have two pillars. Yes, network for AI and AI for network. Both aspects are very important, but I'm an operator point of view. Both pillars are important, but especially a network, AI for network is very interesting and important topic. AI for network can reduce the cost of the network operation and improve the network performance potentially. So they are very, very important topic from operator point of view for the 6G.
James Pearce, TelecomTV (02:27):
So if we stick with AI and talk about AI-RAN, what are some of the AI-RAN strategies that deliver measurable returns for operators today?
Takehiro Nakamura, NTT DOCOMO (02:36):
Yes. Now one of them is, as I mentioned, that the network operation, even for the radio access network operation. Yes. AI can be used already and cost can be reduced and we can avoid a failure of the network operation also. And then maybe cost for the network operation can be reduced. And also performance can be improved by AI thanks to the AI. That can be increase of capacity and also improve the performance of such a kind such as throughput or latency or something like that. That can be directly reflected to our business.
James Pearce, TelecomTV (03:27):
So if we look at the wider ecosystem, so bringing operators, but also vendor partners, what can the wider ecosystem do to ensure that there's clear 6G use cases as the technology is being developed?
Takehiro Nakamura, NTT DOCOMO (03:41):
Yeah. 6G use cases need to be developed for the future, but at least the existing services will be enhanced and upgraded by the 6G thanks to the higher data rate and the lower latency. And also hopefully we can create a new business, new applications thanks to the new capabilities such as NTN, non-terrestrial network and also sensing ISAC. ISAC is also very interesting features, capabilities, and the sensing capability can be very useful to create a new services for the future.
James Pearce, TelecomTV (04:36):
Brilliant. Well, that's everything for today. Thank you so much for joining us on TelecomTV.
Takehiro Nakamura, NTT DOCOMO (04:40):
Thank you.
